MHSA Scholar Tammy Montgomery Elected to ACCF Board as First Student Member

December 21, 2018 By Gold Country Studios

Tammy Montgomery has been elected to the Amador Community College Foundation Board of Directors as the board’s first student member. Montgomery is an MHSA Scholarship student who is completing her third semester in Coastline Community College’s Human Services certificate program.

Maureen Angle, member of the Board as well as mentor and tutor with Amador College Connect, stated that Montgomery will be a great voice for students, “As a ‘re-entry student’ who returned to school after raising a family, Tammy’s perspective on decisions before the board is very important.”

“A large number of our students at Amador College College are re-entry, meaning students who have either postponed college or had a break in their college education,” explains Board Member, Janice Davis. Davis points out that Montgomery experienced a smooth return to college after a long break “by availing herself of Amador College Connect’s many student resources including the computer lab, free tutoring and mentoring.”

Montgomery is completing her Human Services Certificate program this December and will continue in 2019 into Coastline Community College’s A.A. degree program in Human Services.

This past semester, Montgomery has been interning at GriefBusters, a grief support program for school children who have experienced a loss, sponsored by Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties. She explains her role, “So often a child’s grief can come out sideways as behavioral issues or difficulty at school; as a grief counselor I give children the space and validity they need to process their loss.”

“Having suffered great loss in my life, I understand the loneliness of grief and I want to be there to support others”

– Tammy Montgomery

After obtaining her A.A. degree, Montgomery plans to complete the Grief Counseling program at Arizona State University-Online.
